WIKE pays N712m for stranded students abroad

Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, ordered the immediate payment of N512m to offset the debts owed by final year students of the state on overseas scholarship.
The state government had paid an initial N200m, being the sum the students were to pay earlier for their studies, bringing the amount to N712m.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, read, “The students, who were sent overseas to study under the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency, special scholarship by the (Rotimi) Amaechi administration, were abandoned by both the RSSDA and the Amaechi government.
“All entreaties by the stranded students and their parents to RSSDA and Amaechi fell on deaf ears as the students stood the risk of being disallowed to sit their final exams.
“However, respite came when the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, ordered the immediate payment of the sum of N512m to offset the debts owed by the final year students to enable them to sit their final exams and eventually graduate.”
It noted that the governor’s action would secure the future of the students and that of Rivers State.
